Car Battery draining overnight why?
Suspect your Car battery draining overnight?
One of the main reasons we see for a car not starting when you try to use it the next day, is a car battery draining overnight. This isn’t the only reason for a car not starting when it was fine the day before, but it is a very common fault that we see on a regular basis.
We often get called out when the customer has already had their mechanic change the battery, starter motor or the alternator and they still have a problem.
Batteries, Starter Motors and Alternators are not cheap parts to replace so having an experienced auto electrician to investigate the fault prior to trying various parts is definitley worth considering.
Cars have become more and more electrically controlled with sensors for this and computers for that, its no wonder we see more faults now than ever before, that are as a result of an electrical component instead of a mechanical part.
We frequently get asked to visit cars that have stopped working after they have been parked up and left overnight and a lot of the time its because the car battery has drained overnight from something not shutting down properly. Its not just limited to overnight, sometimes a car is parked and upon return a short time later it won’t start without warning.
How and why i hear you ask, we rarely see the same reason for a battery drain,
We have to investigate which area of the car isnt going to sleep when the car is turned off and work out how much of a drain is still occuring when everything should be asleep, from there we can investigate which fuse it relates to and then what area of the vehicle is causing the problem. Unfortunately this isnt something a diagnostic computer being plugged in will tell you, it needs an auto electrician with wiring and fuse information for the vehicle to investigate it in more detail.
I would say in an average week we probably investigate between 1 and 5 car battery drains its a very common fault that we see, and out of the cars that we see quite a high amount have already been seen by another garage and had parts replaced to try and eliminate the fault and failed, hence calling us. People could save themselves money in the long run by getting an auto electrician to carry out diagnostics investigation before replacing expensive electrical parts on cars.
Testing not guessing is key to a cost effective repair for customers, no two cars are the same and its rare to see identical faults.
