As auto electricians, a significant part of our job involves fault finding & diagnosing vehicle problems. Vehicle electrical faults differ from mechanical faults. Mechanical issues often have visual evidence or produce sounds that help identify the problem. For example, worn or damaged discs & pads are easily noticeable, & a broken coil spring is visually apparent. While not all mechanical faults are straightforward to fix, they are generally easier to diagnose quickly. On the other hand, vehicle electrical faults are more complex. Modern vehicles feature multiple computers, modules, relays, fuses, & extensive wiring that can all be connected to electrical components not functioning properly. Sometimes the main electrical components, such as the starter motor, alternator, or headlights, may be at fault. Other times, the vehicle may trigger a fault code or have a non-functional component, requiring us to investigate further. We use detailed wiring diagrams to trace connections in the circuit powering the malfunctioning component to identify the issue. The cause can range from something minor, like a blown fuse or a relay, to more significant problems involving modules, ECUs, body control modules, fuse boxes, & other computers.

Customers frequently ask for estimates on repair costs before we have examined their vehicles. It’s essential to understand that diagnosing electrical issues isn’t as simple as calling a garage for a cost to replace a specific part. We won’t know the extent of the fault until we’ve seen & investigated the specific vehicle. While some garages may provide a random estimate to secure your booking, we will only advise you of our minimum charges for diagnostics & investigation. Once we’ve identified the required parts, we will offer a price for repairs.

Our approach involves testing the vehicle & examining the specific problem—we do not guess or randomly replace parts without testing first. Customers often come to us after having their vehicles repaired elsewhere, still experiencing the same issues. This practice, which we refer to as “throwing the parts canon at the car,” can be costly & may lead to the unnecessary replacement of functioning components.
